October 14 Marks The First Flight from DXB's Terminal 3

Did you know that not even a couple of decades ago, flying into the UAE meant dealing with a beaten, compacted sand runway and a tiny terminal in the middle of a Dubai that was all desert? You certainly wouldn't think that if you have had a chance to see the Dubai International Airport recently, especially not if you have been lucky enough to have been serviced through its Terminal 3, the iconic materialization of over seven years and over $4 billion in planning. Even in comparison to its older Terminals 1 and 2, the latest one is a modern architectural wonder and a poignant expression of Dubai's rapid growth.

What started out as a short-lived boom in the oil sector has now been transformed into one of the world's fastest growing economies. Real estate, tourism, technology, and retail sectors have brought an unprecedented influx of people looking for a place in Dubai. As it is the largest city in the UAE, Dubai had only a few years to install a comprehensive infrastructure to match the increase in traffic. Terminal 3 is one of the greatest achievements this relatively tiny city can boast about because it has further improved Dubai's already impressive international commercial ties.

The terminal, which is being opened in phases, serviced its first flight smoothly on October 14. The first phase is servicing flights to GCC hotspots like Doha, Muscat, Bahrain, Kuwait etc., and as far as New York, Houston and Toronto. The second and third phases will open more flights to the Middle East, Africa and Europe. The fourth and final phase will accommodate all remaining flight routes including South and East Asia, and Australia - an impressive feat, considering the city is just over 4,000 square kilometres. But it's really the kind of volume the builders and designers are looking to host that would cause jaws to drop. Upon completion, the terminal itself will service around 43 million people annually, bringing Dubai International's total capacity to over 60 million.

Like everything else in the emirate, this latest expansion has been done with careful consideration to detail and style. Upon entering the terminal, travellers are greeted by a spacious interior brightly lit by gigantic windows, which stretch its whole length. Strategically designed to be semi-underground, the new terminal interferes little in terms of airport congestion. It holds one of the world's largest baggage handling systems. Luxurious lounges and plenty of comfortable waiting areas ensure travel comfort for even the weariest of jet-lagers. But then again, how could you expect anything else from a terminal built exclusively to be used by the world-class airline Emirates

If these are the kind of numbers Dubai is planning to handle, just imagine the number of qualified professionals it will need to make it happen. Covering a million square meters, Terminal 3 is double the size of Heathrow's new Terminal 5 in London. From aviation to duty-free, tourism to customer service, higher traffic guarantees opportunities for savvy job seekers. Check out how this latest Dubai jewel reflects in the hundreds of jobs posted daily on Jobs In Dubai.
